Job Summary
The Children’s Program Assistant (part-time, short-term ~6 months) provides dependable administrative, curriculum-preparation, volunteer-coordination, and resource support for Second Presbyterian Church’s children’s ministry. Reporting to the Head of Staff and working closely with the Children’s and Youth Ministry Committee, this role helps ensure that children’s worship, Sunday School, and related ministry spaces are organized, supplied, and ready for children, families, teachers, and volunteers each week. The successful candidate will be organized, proactive, attentive to detail, and supportive of 2PC’s mission and ministry. This is a six-month temporary contract paid at $20 per hour. There is a chance the contract could be extended.
Job Responsibilities
This is a six-month temporary contract paid at $20 per hour (with the possibility of extension). Compensation is based on actual hours worked and approved, up to approximately 15 hours per week, unless advance authorization is provided. Because the position supports weekly Sunday programming, occasional Sunday-morning presence or other limited weekend work may be requested with advance notice.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Prepare one lesson each week for children ~ages 3-6, including an age-appropriate Bible story, craft or activity, and a clear, simple lesson plan for volunteers.
● Ensure classrooms are stocked with basic supplies and set up for weekly programming; replenish materials based on volunteer and teacher requests.
● Create and maintain the weekly SignUpGenius schedule for volunteers and accurately transfer confirmed volunteer assignments to the 2PC Volunteer Hub.
● Use the approved substitute list to secure replacement volunteers when scheduled volunteers are unavailable.
● Purchase, organize, and maintain children’s snack supplies, including snacks and compostable cups, while following church purchasing and food-safety guidelines.
● Maintain the Teacher Resource Closet by monitoring inventory, ordering standard supplies, fulfilling specific requests from teaching teams, and delivering materials to classrooms before Sunday programming.
● Periodically organize and tidy children’s ministry resource closets so materials remain accessible, clearly arranged, and ready for use.
● Display children’s artwork and projects in designated areas throughout the church, rotating displays as appropriate.
● Periodically straighten the Children’s Library shelves and return borrowed materials to the correct categories.
● Maintain the children’s library display outside the sanctuary, updating materials to reflect current church seasons, holidays, and congregational celebrations.
● Copy and assemble Sunday School curriculum for all children’s and youth classes; prepare teacher binders and student materials and place them in classrooms at least two weeks before the lessons begin.
● Order books for the Children’s Library and the Book Blessing as requested and approved by the Children’s and Youth Committee.
● Track purchases, receipts, supply needs, and assigned tasks in an organized and timely manner.
● Communicate promptly and professionally with staff members, teachers, volunteers, and vendors regarding schedules, supplies, and program needs.
● Follow 2PC policies and procedures, including Safe Church practices, confidentiality expectations, purchasing procedures, and building-use guidelines.
● Perform other related duties consistent with the scope and scheduled hours of the position, as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or experience in education, children’s ministry, early childhood development, nonprofit administration, or a related field is preferred.
● Prior experience supporting children’s programs, classrooms, churches, schools, camps, or volunteer-based organizations is preferred.
● Demonstrated ability to organize materials, manage recurring deadlines, and coordinate multiple small projects with accuracy.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to provide clear, volunteer-friendly instructions.
● Comfort using common digital tools, including email, Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, SignUpGenius, and database or volunteer-management systems; willingness to learn the 2PC Volunteer Hub.
● Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, anticipate routine needs, and ask for clarification when appropriate.
● Dependable, flexible, and able to maintain a positive, service-oriented approach when priorities change.
● Ability to work respectfully with children, families, volunteers, church staff, and committee members.
● Commitment to the mission and values of Second Presbyterian Church and willingness to support a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for children.
● Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable child-safety and Safe Church requirements, including any required screening or background check.
● Ability to lift and carry boxes or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds and to perform routine tasks that may include standing, bending, reaching, and moving materials between classrooms.

Benefits
The part-time, non-exempt, contract position is expected to average approximately 10-15 hours per week. Weekly scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated with the supervisor. The schedule must include sufficient weekday preparation time to ensure materials and classrooms are ready before Sunday programming.
