Succession Planning-Preparing for The Future

What happens when a key leader leaves, an important role becomes vacant, or critical
knowledge walks out the door with someone? For nonprofits, where teams are often
lean and resources are limited, having the right people prepared for what’s next can
make a big difference in the organization’s ability to stay focused on its mission.
Succession planning doesn’t have to be complicated or reserved for executive
leadership. It’s about taking a practical look at where your organization is today, where
it’s headed, and whether you have the people, skills, and knowledge needed for the
journey. It also provides an opportunity to invest in your current team and build a
stronger pipeline of future leaders.

Through a practical, hands-on approach, participants will explore how to connect
succession planning to the organization’s mission and strategic priorities, identify critical
roles and capabilities, assess current talent and future needs, and address potential
gaps before they become bigger challenges. Participants will leave with practical tools
and ideas that can be adapted to fit nonprofits of different sizes, staffing structures, and
resources.

and relationships that will be important to accomplishing your future goals.
• Get a clearer picture of your current talent and how prepared your team is for the is for the
organization’s future needs.
• Spot potential gaps and vulnerabilities before they become bigger challenges,
including areas where too much knowledge or responsibility rests with one person.
• Identify practical ways to develop your people while connecting their growth and
career goals to the needs of the organization.
• Connect succession planning to what you already do, including performance
conversations, coaching, and leadership development.
• Explore ways to build buy-in with leaders and board members and create a shared
responsibility for developing future leaders.
