Building Better Nonprofits Since 1986

The year 1986 was shadowed by profound national shock, defined by the televised tragedy of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and the breaking of the Iran-Contra political scandal during the Reagan administration. Culturally, it was a formative year that saw the landmark national debut of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the release of iconic films like Top Gun and Platoon, and Mike Tyson’s rise as the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

While in Nashville, “Homecoming ’86” celebrated the bicentennial of the state, featuring a massive, year-long celebration of Tennessee’s local history and culture. This same pivotal year saw the establishment of major civic and cultural institutions that define the city today, including the opening of the Starwood Amphitheater, the formation of the professional Nashville Ballet company, and, most importantly, the founding to the Center for Nonprofit Management.
