STATEMENT OF JOB

The Director of Advocacy is responsible for the oversight and implementation of advocacy-related activities for The Arc Tennessee and the Statewide Advocacy Program implementation as outlined in the Scope of Services from the Department of Disability and Aging (DDA).

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  • Seek opportunities that expand the scope of mission-driven projects offered by The Arc Tennessee
  • Serve on The Arc TN’s leadership team and work collaboratively with other team members to ensure all project requirements are met

Specific Job Duties

  • Manage the delivery of the scope of services required by the Statewide Advocacy Program grant
  • Provide direct advocacy services for individuals with disabilities as appropriate when faced with issues related to civil/human rights/quality of life, service access, health and safety, legal, and decision-making support
  • Supervise the program team members (advocates)
  • Ensure the advocacy staff receives ongoing and consistent support to perform their job effectively
  • Assign advocacy referrals appropriately according to priority level and geographic location 
  • Provide technical assistance as appropriate to individuals with I/DD and their families needing support to navigate the complex system of services
  • Create and maintain a system of documentation for all advocacy-related activities including but not limited to information and referral, technical assistance, and direct advocacy
  • Maintain involvement in various state and local committees, councils, task forces, etc. that impact people with I/DD and their families
  • Develop, conduct, and promote at minimum six (6) workshops/educational opportunities on relevant topics for persons with I/DD, their families, educators, and service providers
  • Supervise the MAPs Peer Mentor Coordinator
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Support other activities of The Arc TN such as family meetings, board committees, conferences, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Reporting

  • Monthly work plan
  • Quarterly success stories
  • Annual report
  • Other documentation upon request

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree preferred; minimum bachelor’s degree or high school diploma or GED with appropriate experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the service delivery system for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities or special education with a bachelor’s degree; minimum of ten years of experience with a high school diploma or GED
  • Program operation experience including program and budget development, implementation, oversight and evaluation
  • Supervisory/management experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Computer literate
  • Team player
  • Ability to have flexibility with work schedule and to travel across the state
  • Ability to work remotely
