Job Summary
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
SCORE is seeking a finance manager to oversee the fiscal management and analysis of SCORE’s grant and subgrant portfolio, ensuring that financial data is accurate, timely, and actively used to support decision‑making and risk management. This role owns grant and subgrant financial tracking and reporting; monitors spending, obligations, and burn rates; manages the coding of expenses to funding sources; and ensures alignment across budgets, contracts, expenditures, and funder requirements.
Serving as a core member of the Finance & Operations team, the Finance Manager reports to the Vice President of Finance & Operations and partners closely with the Director of Finance and program staff to develop grant budgets, financial narratives, and reports, and to maintain and continuously improve financial systems and workflows.
Job Responsibilities
Grants & Subgrants Financial Management
- Maintain up-to-date grant and subgrant financial systems and trackers, ensuring alignment between budgets, expenditures, contract obligations, and reporting requirements.
- Provide in-depth analysis and updates on grant financial status to program and leadership team members regularly.
- Monitor grant spending, obligation, and burn rates; proactively flag risks and variances; and surface clarifying questions as needed.
- Develop grant budgets and financial narratives in partnership with program and development staff.
- Prepare grant financial reports and supporting documentation for funders.
- Assist with preparation of subgrant agreements and manage subgrant payment schedules, in collaboration with the Director of Grants and Strategy Management and Director of Finance.
- Support grantee compliance monitoring as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and clarity in financial systems and workflows.
Accounting & Financial Operations Support
- Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the organization’s strategic plan and grant funding to properly code organizational expenses to the correct programs and grants.
- Support annual audit preparation and response to auditor requests in coordination with the Director of Finance.
- Support the Director of Finance with monthly close activities, including preparation of reconciliations and draft financial statements as needed.
- Ensure adherence to accounting policies and internal controls.
Cross Functional Communication & Collaboration
- Serve as the primary finance contact for program team members regarding grant budgets, spending, and reporting.
- Establish and maintain a regular cadence of communication with program teams to ensure shared understanding of financial status and expectations, surfacing clarifying questions where needed.
- Translate financial information into clear, accessible insights for programmatic colleagues.
- Partner closely with the Director of Finance on forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and clarity in financial systems and workflows.
- Serve as a backup for core finance and accounting functions as needed.
- Support continuity and knowledge sharing across the finance team
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- Minimum two to five years of relevant accounting or finance experience; nonprofit and grants management experience strongly preferred
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and GAAP
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Excellent communication skills and comfort working cross functionally with nonfinance team members
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel required; proficiency with QuickBooks Online preferred
