Homework Hotline provides free, one-on-one tutoring and academic support to K–12 students and their families across Tennessee. We are dedicated to eliminating barriers to education by offering accessible, high-quality tutoring via phone, chat, and online whiteboard.
We are now seeking Volunteer Board Members to serve as Board Officers, including President, Vice President, and Treasurer, to guide the organization’s mission and provide strategic leadership.
Position: Volunteer Board Member (Officers)
Term Length: 1 Year
Commitment: ~6 board meetings per year + committee work, events, and advocacy
Location: Tennessee-based preferred, remote/hybrid participation welcome.
Job Responsibilities
Board Officer Responsibilities
As a Board Officer, you will provide leadership and guidance to the Homework Hotline Board of Directors. You will work closely with fellow board members to ensure that the organization is fulfilling its mission, growing its community of supporters, and maintaining financial stability.
President
The President provides overall leadership and direction to the board. This role requires a committed individual who will set the tone for the board and ensure the effective functioning of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead board meetings and facilitate productive discussion.
- Act as the primary spokesperson and representative for Homework Hotline.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic goals.
- Help lead fundraising efforts and network with potential partners.
- Ensure the board follows best practices for governance, policy development, and strategic planning.
Vice President
The Vice President supports the President and serves as a strategic partner in leading the board. The Vice President will step into the President’s role in their absence and help ensure a seamless leadership transition.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the President with board meeting preparation and facilitation.
- Ensure all board members are engaged and active in their roles.
- Provide support in fundraising efforts and maintaining donor relations.
- Oversee the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan.
- Ensure board compliance with policies and legal requirements.
Treasurer
The Treasurer oversees the financial health of Homework Hotline. This role involves providing strategic oversight and ensuring the organization maintains sound financial practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Executive Director to develop and monitor the organization’s budget.
- Provide regular financial reports to the board, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
- Lead fundraising activities related to financial goals.
- Help safeguard the organization’s assets and manage financial risks.
- Ensure the board’s compliance with financial regulations and policies.
General Board Member Responsibilities (All Officers)
In addition to the officer-specific duties, board members will contribute to Homework Hotline’s overall strategy, organizational development, and community engagement. During your tenure, you agree to:
- Believe in and support the mission of Homework Hotline.
- Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in at least 75% of board meetings, which are held on the 3rd Wednesday of August, November, February, April, May, and June.
- Serve on committees, participate in task groups, and attend key programs or events.
- Make a personal financial contribution by December 15 each fiscal year.
- Support and engage in fundraising activities.
- Help identify and cultivate financial supporters, donors, and sponsors.
- Adopt and monitor the operating budget and fundraising plan.
- Stay informed on issues impacting Homework Hotline and its stakeholders.
- Uphold fiduciary responsibility and protect the organization’s assets.
Qualifications

- Nonprofit governance and leadership
- Fundraising and financial management
- Education, student support, or community organizing
- Strategic planning and policy development
